Social  Media from an Old Fellow's Point of View

I am not really good at writing nor am I active online but this old man will do his best. Since this has to relate to social media and I have very limited experience, may I restate what I said in the past? Had my daughter not open a Facebook account for me, I probably will not be on any social media and not miss it. I look at it once in a while to see what people post and move on, The only other experience I have is with Skype because my wife is from the Philippines and before I retired and moved there, Skype was our way of communicating. Even when I moved to the Philippines, I always called to talk to my family back here. I just feel that face to face communication is the best way to go; body language, facial expressions etc.

I am open to new things, don't get me wrong. I have tried but it is too complicated for me. I am not sure whether it is just because of old age or because of the fact that these changes in technology normally happen too fast I can't keep up.

I have noticed that there's also a website that allows you to post your resume  and connect with other professionals and it can be seen by everybody or  just the employers depending on what you choose. I understand the advantage of this to employers, not wasting time and hire fast but also know that had I just read an online resume and based my screening on how perfect the resume is, I would not have hired very excellent employees.

Another factor I am not active online is because of the hacking and data breach going on even big companies with state of the art resources get compromised. Old people are always victimized by scams on the internet and social media and I feel like the less I post, the less likely they would know anything about me.

I am not against social media as a whole but society must not let it rule our forms of communications and our lives

  1. I really enjoyed reading your blog and can understand where you are coming from when it comes to not having this type of technology as a child. I did not have access to the internet until I was married. However, because I love technology I studied everything I could get my hands on to understand it and to be on top of emerging technologies.

Like you, I wouldn't have a Facebook account if it weren't for my children. I never really used it and have since turned it off because of my job.

I also have an account on LinkedIn. I think it is a great site to post information about your work history and to network with potential employers. Networking can be a real help when you are looking for a job. I also like how you can be endorsed for your skills, etc. on LinkedIn. This shows perspective employers that you have people that believe and you and what you can do. :)

I also am concerned about security issues and look forward to learning more about privacy in social media.

  2. CIS103-

I feel ya there. I often times wish I wasn't so connected and could take a break from social media. I will occasionally deactivate my accounts so that I am not tempted to open up any of my applications, but in the end I always go back to my social media! I think I wouldn't be so drawn to it had I not grown up in such an internet-crazy generation!

  3. I really appreciate your thoughts on your subject. Even though you are not for it, you pretty much still support others that is. I am the same way. I’m not a big fan of them anymore. I use to use Myspace and Facebook like crazy! After a couple of months, I got bored and didn’t really see a point in doing it anymore. The only time that I’m on it, is to send my family pictures of my daughter each week. Even then I find it tedious and don’t understand why people live, eat and sleep social media. Maybe one day I will understand it.
